Preface
My name is Takashi Watari, and I am a Japanese physical therapist. In this book, I will introduce a physical therapy idea.
What is good movement? This is a theme I have been working on for many years as a physical therapist. In the process of this effort, I have reached the viewpoint that it is “smoothness” and “energy efficiency”. In Chapter 1, I will introduce these viewpoints.
In Chapter 2, I will introduce some background on how I reached the viewpoints of “smoothness” and “energy efficiency”. I will also introduce the philosophy inherent in the physical therapy ideas presented in this book.
In Chapter 3, I will show you how to evaluate body motions. This is the main part of this book. No special tools are needed in the evaluation. By using your eyes and hands, you can evaluate the smoothness and energy efficiency of motion.
Chapter 4 introduces the treatment approaches. Treatment approaches are broadly divided into body usage, exercises, and manual therapy. These treatment approaches aim to improve the smoothness and energy efficiency of motion.
Chapter 5 introduces specific examples of physical therapy. I will focus on diseases that occur in the musculoskeletal system, such as the knees, hips, and shoulders. This chapter will help you to understand the physical therapy ideas introduced in this book in concrete terms.
In recent years, the rise of artificial intelligence has been amazing. It will be difficult for us to surpass artificial intelligence in terms of knowledge. Therefore, we as physical therapists need to improve our sensibility to understand individual patients. By reading this book, you can better understand your patient’s body’s unique conditions, such as where in the body motion is limited, what kind of mechanical stress is occurring, what kind of exercises are appropriate, and where in the body you should apply treatment.
I wrote this book primarily for young physical therapists. I hope this book will be useful to you.
